Troglododo, a timeless break on the edge of the Indre Valley

Comfort and serenity, charm and elegance, the original and the unexpected… These are the watchwords of “Troglododo”, the troglodyte hotel. Enjoy a welcome break outside time, close by the Château d’Azay-le Rideau. The charm of the old stone and rocks at the edge of the Indre Valley never fail to enchant visitors.

A family story

When Henri Sarrazin came back from the war in 1947, he bought a troglodyte house in ruins, not far from the centre of Azay-le-Rideau. Here his two children born, including Alain Sarrazin who, in 1987, bought the property himself, with plenty of ideas in mind!

Very soon, in 1992, the site was turned into a gîte and then into three guest rooms in 2001.

After the purchase of other buildings, 5 guest rooms were added in 2015, and the site became a hotel with 10 rooms in 2018.

From this year, visitors will be able to enjoy access to the swimming pool, while two family suites and three Gypsy caravans were added to the charming 3-star hotel.

The Troglos

The troglos feature a locally specific architecture that was perpetuated over centuries, with the earliest dwellings dating from prehistoric times and others from the Middle Ages. The Troglododo site has been inhabited for three centuries. The layout of the buildings is highly unusual. The troglos were dwelling places, with buildings used as barns for storing grain and equipment. Each home had its own bread oven and well, so that we now know how many families lived in the troglodyte sites.

Maintenance of the troglos is carried out on a daily basis. Stone is a living material, and the most complicated period is in summer, due to thermal shock. The average temperature is 23° practically all the year round.

This is a cosy nest under three metres of rock with the walls covered in whitewash! Come and see this surprising site for yourself – you won’t be disappointed.

Nature and a change of scene

With a surface area of 900 m2 and 2,000m2 of grounds, Troglododo provides an introduction to the art of living in Touraine. Come and enjoy a unique experience in a preserved area with your loved one or your family.

Breakfast is a heavenly experience with local and home-made ingredients: an assortment of jams, cheesecake, cakes with seasonal fruits, home-made yoghurt, cheese, Touraine charcuterie… Plenty to delight the taste buds!!!

Troglododo is far removed from all conventions and uniformity. It really stands out thanks to the wide-ranging atmospheres in the rooms, the warm and original outdoor areas connected to them and the quality of services on offer.

The owners’ main motivation is to surprise guests and provide high-quality services in a truly exceptional place.

Open all the year round.
